Christmas cards 2011
Not sure if anybody still reads this LJ, but it's that time of year again. Free christmas card sketches (read about it here. Or just browse a couple entries back.) Next post will be a friends only entry to post info/address or whatever. | | Friday, May 13th, 2011 | | 3:18 pm |
For the moment
Finding time to update this with my fairly uneventful life is getting challenging. So here, the artings: deviantartGroup Sketchblog (I post as panties) I'm not sure where I should go to update about regular life. Still in Vancouver. Still looking to do random anime convention hopping. Still trying to maintain more hobbies than I have time for. Just contact me through AIM, MSN, or something less passive aggressive. | | Sunday, December 26th, 2010 | | 9:53 pm |
not sure what to say - back in LA
Been a long time since I last posted. A lot happened, but nothing of large consequence. I'll try to keep everybody from being bored out. Work's really starting to wear me out. I've always lived under the reality that not everybody gets to be a rock star or pro athlete, but maybe I just let myself go too far off the far end of the philosophy? Of the people who I consider to be my 'bosses,' only one or two I actually respect and want to be loyal to. The others are assholes, unrealistic, or brown nosers. I think the engineers are all realizing this, and we're dropping like flies. Our original engineering team of seven field engineers is now down to 4, all under the age of 30. The unremarkable Christmas bonus did little for our morale. But I'm bad at making life decisions, so I'll just roll with it until it gets closer to breaking point. Only in lukewarm waters right now. Social life is kind of cool? It's more of the same. Small groups of friends in Vancouver... It's hard to meet more, and I'm not sure I really want to. Being back in LA is always cool. I've been looking forward to the week off we get for winter holidays. Cards went out. Forgot to bring my tablet back with me. I'll try to be more frequent with the updating so that I can be more specific and interesting in post topics. It's hard to think anybody cares. | | Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 | | 8:14 pm |
santa's elves are just loli and shota
It's Christmas card time again! Last year's batch of cards: 23 totalWould be cool to break that record of 23. So how it goes: Completely free sketches on 4"x5" cards of (just about) anything you request with the exception of things I really don't want to draw, but I'll usually draw just about anything. Just give me your name, address, and what you would like. I promise to not stalk your house from an unmarked white van. Internationals are really cool (only 2 made it off of North American shores last year). Trades not required although welcome. As usual, girls and good ideas tend to get priority/attention. I'll work on them up till a week or so before Christmas and then send them all out. If you request one now and forget doing so, it'll make a nice Christmas surprise. Unless I send you gay porn, which may ruin the holiday. Contact me however you like, or just leave a note with the info in my next LJ entry (will be friend's only) | | Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 | | 11:04 pm |
i'm a city boy
The NYAF recap. Got there really early Friday. 6AM early. I thought I'd explore the city a bit, since I wasn't set to meet with Shoji till 11:30 (Con didn't start till noon or 1PM the first day or something). I went straight to Soho. I'm not really super-fashionable or trendy, but I (like the stereotypical asian guy) have a soft spot for sneakers. Soho's got east coast's only tier zero, along with a couple other notable shops. They were, unfortunately, all closed but hey, I window shopped and felt like a trendster. (and saved money doing so) Finally met up with Shoji, after a small amount of confusion at Penn Station. Dropped off some gear at the hotel and then went to the con to set up the table: That photo kind of explains how much of noobs we are when it comes to running a table. Cardboard has never failed me. After making almost no sales the first day, it was obvious that any money to be made would be through sketch commissions. And holy hell there were a lot of sketch commissions. Maybe I should have pulled myself off the table to explore the con more... but I was having a blast doing as many sketches as I could for people. Luckily, there weren't any special guests that I was looking forward too. Things wind down and we leave. Shoji and friends were tired out, so I explored around town by myself looking for food. Found three or four New York-y looking pizza places. Tried them all. One dollar pizza slices? AWESOME. Ended the night with probably the earliest I've ever slept at a con. Second day was more sketching, some small amount of wandering the con, and then exploration of Time Square (which I some failed to find the night prior, despite actually circling the place by foot) Met Jasmin, snottle, and friends at the con that day, which was pretty cool. Wish we had some more time to hang out, since it seems our years of friendship managed to accumulate to..... 5 minutes of conversation? :P Shared some sketches (her friend actually commissioned me without me knowing they were acquainted). Cut the price for it since I would have just done it for free if I knew earlier. More early sleeping. (non-sleep deprived conventioning is weirrrrdddd) Third and final day was EVEN MORE SKETCHING. At least it doesn't close early on the last day like AX. Hung out with some artists afterwards, wandering Chinatown and little Italy. Real artists, not fake animus like me. It was weird when they asked if I had a sketchbook. I claimed to have no such thing. They eventually had to go to bed and left me to wander the night until my flight at 7AM the next morning. Luckily, New York never shuts down. Awesome amount of people wandering Time Square all times of the day and 24hr subway. Actually worked out pretty well, as I was able to finish seeing most of the sights (and eating more NY street food and pizza). So, in the end... the 7AM flight without a hotel room worked out pretty well. Ending thoughts: Minus airfare (which I used frequent flyer miles to get), I think I actually turned a profit. Maybe I should have sold sketches or prints for cheaper. Sold out of the panty stocking print. All 10 of them. haha. I thought nobody would know what this print was. Turns out the fan community moves fast these days. Did 28 (or more) sketches. I was hoping to do more, but I had a blast chatting with people who stopped by the table. Awkward fans are fun. NYCC totally molested NYAF. Obvious bias towards NYCC. The anime stuff was always shoved in a corner (dealers) or down two flights of stairs, all the way to the left and shoved into a room (anime artist's alley). NYAF got shafted by this deal. Lot's of weird guys requesting porn. Hahaha. Most of them kept skirting around what they really wanted even while I was teasing them about it. Girls that requested porn were a lot more straight forward and fun to talk to. New York is an awesome place. I wouldn't mind taking my next job there if the company wins a project. This con hopping and tabling thing... I might just get addicted to it. | | Sunday, September 26th, 2010 | | 1:10 pm |
I've got nothing for NYAF, but got something from PAX A friend found thisThat's a lot of hair. Haha. And that's probably as much of me as you'll see in a public entry. I'll make a private entry about the status of my hair after this one. NYAF is coming up, and I'm just a bit completely unprepared, and maybe have screwed myself in order to get a free flight using frequent flyer miles. I had hoped to stay in New York for an extra day or two for exploration and adventure purposes, but that was scrapped having failed to secure lodging and partners in crime. Maybe the next convention. I need more internet friends with their own place. The big deal right now is my flight timing. I'm arriving at 6AM the Friday of... so I'll need to kill some time before the convention registration opens. The even bigger problem is me leaving 7AM the Monday after without a place to crash Sunday night. I have to find some way to survive through most of the Night Sunday. I'm thinking I'll find some place to stash my luggage and hopefully also find some people who don't need to get home to hang out with me till fairly late into the night. And I think I can call my attempts to have somethign to print/sell at NYAF a failure. I'll take one more go at it this week, but it doesn't look good. I still don't even know the details of how to get something printed. I'll just throw something random together if needed. I have time in the morning, maybe I'll stop by kinko's or something. Things that have been put on polish hiatus: Close Not close Maybe I can throw headphones on here and pretend it's just my style to leave things messy Maybe this is good enough. Thinking about doing a couple like this and putting two on a print or something. | | Sunday, September 5th, 2010 | | 2:09 am |
PAX HAS NO CASE MOD CONTEST. BOOOO
Reporting from PAX here. And it's been a bitter sweet state of affairs. The exhibition hall has been pretty cool and I got to play some games. Being part of the BYOC meant I got in about an hour earlier than the rest of the crowd and was able to play at the booths that were already set up. Skipped some of the massive lines. (Most of them were not yet unwilling to hand out free swag, though) Still got plenty of free stuff later. I'm pretty confident my case would take rank in the best of show (if not winning it)r... If they had a case mod contest. I'm pretty disappointed of the lack of contest and the lack of creative cases. This may be the last (and only) major LAN that this iteration of FEDEX will see. A lot of pictures were taken, however, and plenty of questions asked. Some dudes from MSNBC also took a short interview/photos about it. I might be small-time famous. I hope Fedex doesn't sue me: Like I said, the other cases here have been lacking. There's the kid with the desktop strapped to a scooter, some dude from dangerden (I think), and the usual neon-window-water-piped-money-throwers. There's a large portion of laptops and everything else looks to be store bought mods with the least of creativity. The internet lead me to believe that there would be a lot more interesting cases here. Now I know why #5 in the top 5 for magazine articles always looks shitty or boring. They should include #6-10 to give a more accurate representation of what to expect at a LAN. | | Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 | | 8:00 am |
Maybe I'm finally getting somewhere
A lot of things have happened since I last posted. Maybe so much that I haven't had the time to post about it? Not really. I just never know if anybody would actually care if I wrote about it. But here goes anyways: So far, the most Vanouver-y thing I've done (doesn't feel like something that I could also do in LA) has been seeing the big fireworks festival thing. I went two Saturdays, seeing Spain's (the winner) and Canada's tribute to China (I don't know why they would have a tribute to China either). Spain's was awesome. Canada's would have been awesome as well if I had not already seen Spain's. Either way, Vancouver has probably ruined fireworks for me, as all other shows will feel quite marginal. Kind of like how living in LA has ruined theme parks. Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott's, Magic Mountain, and Raging Waters in one spot? Yea, there's not much left for me elsewhere. And the conventions. Anime Expo vs any other anime convention leaves a huge margin of difference. Especially compared to Anime Evolution in Vancouver. I think there were 6000 attendees? It wasn't as miserably tiny as people made it out to be, but still vastly different from what I'm used to. No Japanese guests, or any other guests I cared for, and placed in the middle of a University. It was almost boring. The highlight was probably the SC2 tourney (which I made it not-very-far-at-all in), and the people I was hanging out with. But, as per usual with anime conventions, my artist mojo is revitalized and I feel like improving again. It doesn't help when I was hanging out with artists. I've been working on learning how to color these last two years or so. It's hard. Sometimes it makes sense and other times it just goes weird or boring. It's not that I have a problem with doing it the old way: But I've honestly never been very good at cleaning up my lines (no surprise), and everybody seems to like the painting style: ... which I'm also not very good at. I still hesitate too much with upping the color saturation and getting really detailed. Or I go overboard with details while avoiding polishing: ... and it just looks like a mess. Then there's the massive problem of trying to force myself off pchat, or figuring out how to scale up and continue my pchats in another software. I think I've got till NYAF to figure out a happy medium. Things need to start getting pumped out. | | Friday, July 30th, 2010 | | 2:20 am |
summmmmmeerrrrr~~ doesn't happen when you work
It's almost August, which means that maybe I should start considering what I might need to do before NYAF. I haven't a clue what I'm supposed to do with a table. Books? Prints? Commissions? Help me out here, I'm a first timer. I was thinking I'd do free sketches. See how many I can do in one weekend? But maybe nobody would want one from me? Especially with no samples. So I'm going to get some things polished up and ready for printing. Maybe a pokemon sketchbook too, if that falls together: (Impossibly hard to ink on tablet. I think I was born a scribbler.) Headphones-on-touhous artbook just got restarted too, so I'm going to have to get rolling on that. Expectations seem high for that book I haven't made an entry in a while, and it's been even longer since I posted a bento box. I still make them, by the buttload: It just doesn't feel as special when it's become a daily thing... weird how this became normal. I wish I worked at a job that I could show it off to. Oh, and I finally bought a TV Party at my place? | | Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 | | 2:45 pm |
I live my life a convention at a time...
...for those four days or less, I'm free. Haha. I think I'm finally starting to get used to the awkwardness of anime con-ing. It gets funner each time. AX 2010 was definitely fun. I got to meet a bunch of artists, hang out with 'net friends, and acted just a little more shameless than usual (parapara 101, YeeEEeeAAaaaAa). First time I've really gone out of my way to meet other internet artists, so that was awesome. Went out to eat with them and everything. Touhou kids were awesome as usual. Other internet buddies that called me and hung out were also awesome. This year was surprisingly devoid of extremely awkward meetups is everybody getting more normal or am I getting used to it? Didn't try to get every autograph I could, but I did make sure to grab the May'n one. (x2~) I also got Nakajima Megumi's autograph on the other side of the Macross F album, just to complete it. I hope I'll get to do it all again and have more fun before I become the creepy old man. But even then, cosplay could get me through: Next conventions I'll be attending this year: Anime Evolution (August, Vancouver BC) Penny Arcade Expo (September, Seattle WA) New York Anime Fest ~with table (October, New York NY) I wanted to go to Otakon and other cons as well, but nobody invited me to share a hotel room with them D: |
